Forspoken main characters1/14/2024 ![]() Forspoken is a fundamentally serious game that always has periodic quips and jokes. The comparison earlier between wedding and funeral music doesn't really fit because people include funny anecdotes in their eulogies and tell jokes at wakes, even if the overall tone is mournful and somber. Marvel is constantly winking at the audience and going "Isn't this ridiculous? What a silly name for a villain!" Marvel's whole thing is that there's no breathing room for any emotion or sincerity cause there's a quip within 10 seconds of anything semi-serious happening. HiFi Rush is even more Marvel-esque than Forspoken in the way it doesn't take anything seriously. Perhaps we’ll have a collective Dragon’s Dogma moment, where people might actually play the game after it’s been scorched to oblivion and realize it’s actually creatively taking some risks in this open world mindless genre and doing something legitimately unique. Everyone screaming to the high heavens how poorly she’s written, how abrasive and vulgar it all is - definitely didn’t feel like it to me. These maps are littered with little diversions and a ton of things to collect - this game has some of the best traversal, the most creativity regarding mixing in spells with combat and a really strong main character. Nothing major has changed since the old mission marker map quest design of GTA III in 2001. It’s pure insanity to me that so many people will play all these open worlds - Assassins’s Creed, Far Cry, Ghost of Tsushima, Spider-Man, Horizon, inFamous, hell maybe even a PS+ version of Days Gone - and somehow say this is the worst main character and the most dreadful open world. And it's unfortunate because a lot of people are missing out on a legitimately fun time because of it.įorspoken is legitimately awesome. Now imagine the frustration of all the misrepresentation and misinformation swirling around this game on top of that. I'm not ringing the conspiracy bells here, but the common sentiment amongst people actually playing the game is one of confusion regarding the what they have in their hands and what reviewers slammed. It has it's flaws and need of polish in spots, but the firestorm of bad WoM determined its fate and robbed it of a fair shake amongst the public and yes, the reviewers too. I couldn't manage more than 18 hours in Horizon before losing interest, where here I'm already 26 hours from just fucking around and not even up to the second boss yet. Take a look at the OT brimming with hesitant people that gave it a chance and now can't put the game down. Maybe one day you'll find it for $5 bucks or free on PS+ and realize the same thing, because unfortunately it's probably the only way any of the naysayers cemented in their bias/misconceptions will see the actual quality of the title. And it's unfortunate because a lot of people are missing out on a legitimately fun time because of it. ![]() ![]() Regardless, I think there's a nugget worth discussing, like that Austin Walker article people have been posting, about how snark can undercut emotional moments and make it seem like creators are embarrassed about what they're making (or its source material, depending), even with comedic hyperstylized media.Ĭlick to shrink.Take a look at the OT brimming with hesitant people that gave it a chance and now can't put the game down. I don't think it's as simple as just racism - explicit racism, subconscious racist bias, and differences in aesthetics/narrative genre/game genre all play into it imo. There's naturally going to be a difference in the style of dialogue and its reception. Racism is everywhere and is something we have to constantly work to unlearn, not just active bigotry.Īlso, though, Hi-Fi Rush is ridiculously cartoony and stylized, where Forspoken is going for a more photorealistic aesthetic and overall serious tone, from what I've seen of it. A lot of it is subconscious bias, even from people who are progressive. It absolutely is - this is far from the first time we've seen Black female characters in media judged way harder than other characters, the same way society loves to pile on Black women harder than other people. I think it's naive to believe that Forspoken isn't being received more harshly because of misogynoir.
